Topology is the arrangement of network devices and their connection. The star topology is most commonly used as it is the most fault tolerant. If one cable is cut most of the network can continue working. A Wide Area Network (WAN) is the connection of two or more Local Area Networks (LANs), it does not require the internet to connect them as the diagram shows, it could just be a direct Fibre Optic connection.
